Tim Cresswell presents an interesting idea when he displays the different uses of place to suggest that there is much more to place then we assume. It is interesting to realize that place is not necessarily a location in time and space, but rather, a space the one brings meaning too. This take allows us to link multiple ideas and instances of the occurrence of place. Once we separate our ideas of place with its common attachment to geography it is easier to explore a world of places in a much greater detail.

Semiotics

Maxwell Mkwezalamba
September 2nd 2008
Semiotics for Beginners, Daniel Chandler

While I agree with the realization that connotation and denotation can be seen in a similar manner and even used interchangeably I see a clear distinction between the two. I feel like it is a mistake to look at connotation and denotation in terms of having levels. To me, this is where we lose the density and potency of the words. As an example; Visually black and white are clearly defined in a meaning. But when they are broken down into levels, it is difficult to assume at which point shades of black become shades of white. Just because there is no clear defined marker, doesn’t mean there isn’t a defined meaning.
Especially when we talk of signs and symbols in relation to language. Signs often carry a lot of history in terms of connotation.
